The Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) convenient mobile app, the Ghana Tax Stamp Authenticator, helps Ghanaians check the authenticity of the products they buy and consume. Consumers can scan and validate the excise tax stamps affixed on products such as tobacco, water, alcohol, and soda, sold in the retail stores in Ghana. The app, launched last year, enables the Ghanaian public to verify the authenticity of excisable products. This BBC World News report reveals that traders have started using fake stamps – and describes the heavy penalties they could face for committing such fraud.
