Addressing Smokeless Tobacco and building Research Capacity in South Asia (ASTRA)
ASTRA is a world-class, interdisciplinary group, aiming to reduce the substantial burden of disease caused by smokeless tobacco (ST). ST refers to tobacco products that are consumed without smoking. Such products are particularly popular in South Asia and include ‘chewing tobacco’ (e.g. paan, gutkha or zarda), as well as various other types of oral and nasal tobacco (like naswar). ST products have historically been assumed to be less harmful than cigarettes, so not very much research has been done on smokeless tobacco. However, ST is highly addictive and is known to cause cancers of the mouth and neck, as well as cardiovascular disease and pregnancy problems.
ICMR- Global Knowledge Hub on Smokeless Tobacco(SLT)
Knowledge Hub works with a dedicated infrastructural setup and staff for smooth functioning. As decided by the experts, the Director NICPR would be supervising the consultants/experts and allied staff. The entire resource team collectively functions to develop knowledge base and for developing/implementing mining tools, developing and implementing virtual network platform for sharing data and expertise in their respective regions.
Strengthening bio-chemical, research, policy, capacity building and cessation support to advance smokeless tobacco control in India
Global experts working on smokeless tobacco (SLT) control has recommended several steps in line with the provisions of the WHO FCTC and beyond to achieve the SLT control targets during the inter-country meeting on SLT organized by the WHO-FCTC Global Knowledge Hub on Smokeless Tobacco in August 2017.Given the extent and multiple faces of the SLT use epidemic in the country, the need of the hour is to undertake a holistic approach in dealing with the problem that includes action not only on the current evidence base but also informing the existing science to advance further policy actions to effectively curb the menace in the country. Hence, the aim of this task force project is to better understanding of the microbiology, chemistry and behavioral aspects of using SLT products needs to be studied.
