The devastating impact of COVID-19 has underscored the fundamental importance of health and of a coordinated economic recovery programme that is aligned with SDGs. Implementation of the WHO FCTC presents a trove of opportunities for governments to stimulate the revival of their economies in a sustainable manner. The tobacco industry is a barrier to progress in this area, in spite of (mis)representing itself as a positive contributor to SDGs.
Those working in health and development areas need to identify novel opportunities to drive fulfillment of SDGs. To counter anticipated challenges posed by the tobacco industry during this process, evidence of its deceptive behavior in relation to SDGs must be exposed.
